During the Civil War, writing letters was the only way for most families to keep in touch. The postal service was pretty reliable and it was easy to get letters from one place to another. Newspapers in big cities were published on a daily basis. The Civil War was the first war fought on home soil that had newspaper reporters at the actual battles to provide a first hand report of what was happening on the war front. Often the newspapers were able to publish news of battles long before letters arrived home from the soldiers.
